Have you ever been reading with your child, and as they read they say a word wrong? Sometimes, they keep right on reading without noticing what they've said! When this happens to your child, here's what you can do to help:
- Don't correct them right away. Let your child get to the end of the sentence. Often, they will be thinking as they read, and will go back to correct the word when they've reached the end of the sentence.
- If your child doesn't catch the mistake on their own, tell them "Oops! I heard one mistake in that sentence! See if you can figure out where it was!" This prompts them to go back to the beginning of the sentence and listen to their reading.
- If that didn't work, repeat the sentence they read (mistake and all) and ask "Does that make sense? Does that word sound right?" They should be able to tell you which word sounds wrong.
- Sometimes, you will have to point to the word and ask "What word is that?" Your child might need help segmenting the word in order to hear all the sounds.
- When your child has correctly identified the word, have them read from the beginning of the sentence again. This prompts them to put the word in context and they will be better able to recognize it in future sentences. You might even stop them at the end of the sentence and ask "Did that new word make sense? Yes, it does!"
